What is the Health, Wellbeing & Equity Impact Assessment Research Unit
The Health, Wellbeing & Equity Impact Assessment Research Unit is a research, evaluation, training and resource unit of the University of Otago. It is a joint initiative between the Division of Humanities, the Division of Health Sciences - both part of the University of Otago, and Quigley and Watts Ltd.
The Health, Wellbeing & Equity Impact Assessment Research Unit brings together leading experts in the field with the aim of researching, promoting, and supporting the use of HIA throughout New Zealand, and helping to embed consideration of health and wellbeing within planning and policy making. The HIA Research Unit has links with other similar HIA units internationally and the Public Health Advisory Committee , Wellington and the Centre for Impact Assessment Research and Training (CIART) also based at Otago University.
What we do
- We undertake research relating to HIA and evaluate HIAs conducted in New Zealand.
- We provide practical training on HIA to those interested in considering health and wellbeing within planning and policy making across a wide range of sectors. This includes policy makers, planners, funders, advocates, public health professionals and senior officials.
- We support the practice of HIA through the development and evaluation of resources, provision of informal advice, and networking.
- We advocate for the use of HIA through presentations and publications and media work.
